UNLABEL DEATH
There may be no word—no subject, no label—that evokes a more visceral response than Death.
It is, perhaps, the label most in need of being “UnLabeled.”
In much of Western culture, we’ve become increasingly comfortable speaking about sex. We may even be willing to talk about money. Yet when it comes to death and dying, conversation often stops. Fear enters. Silence takes over.
Whether shaped by culture, religion, history, or personal experience, death remains one of the last great human taboos.
And yet it is one of the only experiences every one of us will share.
We celebrate birth with openness and ceremony. Death is too often met with avoidance, discomfort, or denial.
What if that changed?
What if our relationship with death became one of the greatest gateways to living more fully?
Why Death?
Death is not only an ending. It is also a mirror.
It asks us what matters. What remains. What we have not said. What we have loved. What we are still carrying. What it means to live awake.
UnLabel Death is an exploration of death, dying, grief, and living through the lens of personal storytelling. It is not about making death easy. It is about making space for honest conversation, shared wisdom, and deeper humanity.
The Beginning of UnLabel Death
In May 2022, UnLabelMe launched its first exploration of UnLabel Death by interviewing people on the streets of Asheville about death.
Anyone who wanted to share had something to say.
Some spoke with fear. Some with reverence. Some with grief. Some with humor. Some with questions. All of them revealed something profoundly human.
That first exploration confirmed what we already sensed: when people are given a safe space to speak honestly about death, they often speak even more deeply about life.
Stories That Transform Us
Since then, UnLabelMe has interviewed and borne witness to many people sharing stories about death, dying, grief, care, and conscious living.
We have heard from end-of-life doulas, hospice nurses, volunteers, bedside caregivers, loved ones, and people facing the final days, weeks, or months of their lives.
The wisdom is profound. The honesty is humbling. The stories are unforgettable.
Statistics and facts can inform us. Stories transform us.
Dying on Stage
There may be no more transparent form of personal storytelling than someone standing before a live audience, bearing their heart and soul in real time.
That is why UnLabelMe launched Dying on Stage in Asheville in March, 2026.
The sold-out theatre was not only a testament to the event. It was illuminating a deeper hunger: people are longing for courageous spaces where uncomfortable subjects can be met with honesty, reverence, compassion, and humanity.
Dying on Stage is not a performance about death. It is a living invitation into deeper conversation, deeper presence, and deeper connection.
Death Consciousness. Conscious Living.
UnLabelMe’s hope for Dying on Stage is to amplify the message and Movement of Emberlight and the Center for Conscious Living & Dying: that death consciousness supports conscious living.
When we become more willing to speak about death, we often become more willing to live with intention.
To forgive.
To connect.
To tell the truth.
To love more openly.
To remember what matters.
UnLabel Death is not about fear. It is about honesty. It is about humanity. It is about allowing one of life’s most universal experiences to bring us closer to one another—and closer to the truth of how we want to live.
