Why is UnLabelMe important?
Because we are living in a time when people are increasingly categorized before they are understood. Labels, assumptions, algorithms, and headlines often shape how we see one another before a conversation ever begins. When people stop feeling seen, heard, and understood, connection suffers.
UnLabelMe exists to help create more opportunities for curiosity, empathy, understanding, and human connection, which we need now more than ever to address the “Othering” that is threatening to tear us apart in all aspects of society.
UnLabelMe reminds us that humanity is way bigger than division.
What's the big deal about “Labels”?
Labels aren’t inherently good or bad. Labels are language. Words. And Words Matter.
They help us organize information, describe experiences, and communicate aspects of identity.
The challenge begins when a Label leads to an Assumption.
When we believe a Label tells us everything we need to know about a person, we stop being curious.
While a Label may describe part of a person, it should never become the whole story. It’s why we say, “Label Me to See Me. UnLabel Me to Know Me.”
What is "UnLabeling"?
UnLabeling is the practice of moving beyond assumption(s).
It is what we can do when we are willing to look deeper, listen longer, and remain curious about people whose experiences may be different from our own.
It’s not about abandoning anyone’s identity. It is about expanding perspectives. All of ours.
The goal is not to erase labels. It’s to encourage people to see human beings beyond them.
Are you “UnLabeling Labeling”?!!
Indeed, we are.
Let’s face it. Labeling is simply something we do, all of us. As Humans. From the moment we wake-up until we go to sleep. It’s the way we (try to) organize Life. Make sense of the complexity.
Once we realize this, we can take the shame out of (“UnShame”) a natural part of being Human. It’s as much a natural part of being Human as breathing without thinking
The problem isn’t inherent in the Words, or the Labels. It’s what WE do with the assumptions that arise from the Labels.
That’s where we come in. To illuminate and elevate awareness of the Paradoxes.
Are you Anti-Label?
Definitely not. If we were, we’d then also be anti-words, or anti-language. And we love words.
Labels can serve important purposes. They can help people find community, language, belonging, support, and understanding.
UnLabelMe is not about eliminating labels. It’s about recognizing their limitations and their inherent Paradox.
We understand that identity does matter. And, we also believe that no Label can fully contain the complexity of a human life.
Why is Personal Storytelling so powerful?
Stories open our perspective.
Perspective fosters empathy and compassion.
Empathy and compassion enhance connection.
A statistic can inform us. A story can transform us.
Stories help us move from assumptions to understanding.
They remind us that every person carries experiences, challenges, hopes, fears, triumphs, and lessons that cannot be reduced to a single word or category.
Stories help us see that we are mirrors for one another, and help us focus on the ties that bind.
What makes UnLabelMe different from other Movements?
Most Movements rally people around a shared position. We are connecting people and bringing them together around shared humanity.
We’re not here to tell people what to think or feel, or asking anyone to agree. We’re offering folks an invitation to listen. To share. To stay open. To understand.
We’re here to create opportunities for people to think deeper, listen better, be more curious and connect more honestly.
We’re here to open minds, not change them. Because, as Leonard Cohen said, “the crack is where the light gets in.”
Who is UnLabelMe for?
Anyone who believes people are more than categories.
Anyone who values curiosity over assumptions.
Anyone who believes listening matters.
Anyone who wants deeper conversations and stronger Communities.
Anyone who believes humanity is bigger than “us versus them.”
If that resonates, this Movement is for you.
What is the UnLabelMe “I JUST WANNA UNDERSTAND” RoadTrip?
We are traveling the country, creating “safe spaces” for people to speak their truths. The “I Just Wanna Understand” RoadTrip is our Movement-in Motion.
It’s a traveling exploration of humanity through stories, conversations, gatherings (Fields), interviews, shared meals, and community experiences. Food, Music, Culture. Conversations.
It brings UnLabelMe directly into towns, cities, campuses, neighborhoods, festivals, and communities.
Our intention, our goal, is simple:
Meet people where they are.
Listen deeply.
Share stories.
Build bridges.
Create connection.
The RoadTrip is a living exploration of humanity.
Part documentary.
Part storytelling project.
Part social experiment.
Many parts Grassroots, Community Movement.
We travel from place-to-place meeting people where they are, setting up Listening Booths, collecting stories, creating conversations, sharing meals, hosting gatherings, and exploring what connects us beneath and beyond our differences.
Why is understanding Paradox so important?
Because Life is rarely either/or.
It’s often both/and. So are Humans.
We can be strong and vulnerable.
Confident and uncertain.
Traditional and progressive.
Independent and deeply connected.
Light and dark.
Analytical and emotional.
Masculine and feminine.
The ability to hold Paradox allows us to see complexity without needing to force everything into binary thinking and opposing camps.
Paradox creates room for compassion, perspective, and wisdom.
What was the inspiration behind UnLabelMe?
This Movement emerged from a simple observation:
People are increasingly reducing one another to categories..
Identity Labels.
Generational Labels.
Religious Labels.
Gender Labels.
Economic Labels.
Diagnostic Labels.
(And of course Political Labels
What we’ve learned is that every meaningful conversation reveals something deeper.
Behind every opinion is a story.
Behind every story is a human being. With their own context and journey.
UnLabelMe was created to create more opportunities for these stories to be seen and heard.
What does "We Are All on a Spectrum of Everything" mean?
Human beings are not fixed.
We are layered, evolving, contradictory, paradoxical, and beautifully complex.
Most aspects of life exist on a spectrum. And, each of us has our unique lens on the world, our own desires, interests, perspectives, formed by a combination of MANY elements through our lives:
Family.
Friends.
Beliefs.
Experiences.
Personality.
Identity.
Strength.
Fears.
Confidence.
Belonging.
Growth.
Where we are (on a Spectrum of anything) is OUR place. It doesn’t make ours right or wrong.
The more we understand complexity, the less likely we are to reduce one another to simplistic categories.
Our perspectives, our lenses, are our own, born and crystallized out of our particular, individual circumstances. Each one of ours is unique. Yet we often don’t understand why “they” don’t agree with us, with our opinions, our beliefs, or see the world, the issue, as we do. We (too often) act like we are right, that our POV is right, instead of seeing it as simply our place, with others, on the spectrum of everything.
Is UnLabelMe Political?
Nope. We consider ourselves “Post-Partisan.”
We’re not a Political Party. We are the Human Party.
We welcome and embrace people from all backgrounds, beliefs, identities, generations, and perspectives in ways that transcend limiting silos like age, gender, race, ethnicity, geography, sexual identity.
The UnLabelMe Movement isn’t built around ideology or dogma. A primary foundational belief is that that we are ALL in this together.
Our essence is amplified by curiosity, civility, empathy, conversation, and connection. And, from a feeling that we can, indeed, ALL do better.
A common desire to Lower the Temperature and Raise the Vibration (all around us).
We care less about what side someone is on and (WAY) more about whether folks are willing to engage with openness and respect.
What are The Fields?
“Out beyond right and wrong
there is a field.
I’ll meet you there.”
-Rumi
Fields are our Gatherings, places where we form and connect Communities around shared, lived experiences, interests, passions, questions, or life journeys.
Some Fields gather around identity.
Others gather around creativity, grief, healing, purpose, culture, music, food, storytelling, or service. You name it, we can (and will) co-create a Field with you to bring people together.
Fields breed opportunities for people to connect through what they share rather than what separates them.
Why a RoadTrip?
Because understanding rarely happens from a distance.
It happens face-to-face.
Across tables.
On front porches.
In coffee shops.
At schools.
At festivals.
In small towns and big cities.
The RoadTrip allows us to leave assumptions behind and experience people, places, and perspectives firsthand. We create Community in Communities.
What is UnLabelMe looking for on the RoadTrip?
It’s not so much what we’re “looking for”…it’s more about what we’re “open to”…
Witnessing Stories.
Human stories. Not perfect stories.
Stories that reveal what people care about.
What shaped them.
What challenges them.
What inspires them.
What they wish others understood.
The RoadTrip is built on the belief that every person has a story (or a million!) worth hearing.
Who do you interview?
Everyone. Yes, it’s true.
Veterans.
Teachers.
Artists.
Farmers.
Students.
Entrepreneurs.
Parents.
Elders.
Community leaders.
People whose voices are often heard.
People whose voices are rarely heard.
The goal is not representation of categories.
It’s helping humans understand humans. Better.
Are you trying to change people's minds?
Definitely not. And, it’s no secret that we ARE trying to open minds. And hearts.
We’re creating and curating opportunities for people to understand each other more deeply.
The “I Just Wanna Understand” RoadTrip is rooted in curiosity rather than persuasion.
We believe wholeheartedly that listening can propel more transformation, more empathy and compassion, more connection, than debating.
What questions do you ask?
What’s truly most important to us is finding out what’s on YOUR mind, and in YOUR heart. That’s way more important than any agenda we might have, or what we might want to know.
That’s the reason we start with The Why. “Why are you here?” Once we open that pathway, we get to explore together. While the themes that follow may vary, they share a common intention. To have people feel safe to be transparently, authentically, themselves:
- What shaped you?
- What gives you hope?
- What do you wish people understood about you?
- What has life taught you?
- What brings people together?
- What do we have in common?
- What does belonging mean to you?
Our goal is never to extract opinions. It’s to reveal, and revel in, humanity.
What makes the RoadTrip different from a traditional documentary?
Most documentaries begin with a conclusion.
The RoadTrip begins with two basic questions. “Why are you here?” “What’s on your mind?”
We’re not traveling to prove a point. We’re traveling to discover one.
Your stories become our guide.
Is the RoadTrip only about difficult conversations?
Not at all.
We are exploring the full spectrum of human experience. The Human Condition.
Joy.
Humor.
Creativity.
Food.
Music.
Love.
Friendship.
Culture.
Purpose.
Celebration.
While the Movement is illuminating the essence of the Polarization and “Othering” that divides us, it’s also a pathway to focus on what connects us.
What does UnLabelMe hope to discover?
We hope to discover (or really reinforce) what has always been true:
That beneath our labels, identities, beliefs, and backgrounds, we share far more than we often realize.
The RoadTrip is a search for common ground without requiring sameness. It’s an ongoing opportunity to heal the divides. Where we all can contribute to “Lowering the Temperature and Raising the Vibration.” All around us.
What happens to the stories collected along the way?
The stories become part of the living archive of UnLabelMe.
They may be shared through:
- Films
- Podcasts
- Social media
- Articles
- Photography
- Community events
- Educational content
- Live experiences
- Future projects and collaborations
Each story helps expand perspective and deepen connection.
Can I nominate my town as a stop on the RoadTrip?
Absolutely.
The RoadTrip is designed to meet people where they are.
We welcome invitations from communities, organizations, schools, businesses, cultural centers, nonprofits, and individuals who believe meaningful conversations matter, and who want to co-create – with UnLabelMe and with your neighbors – ways to create Community in Communities.
Can I host a RoadTrip stop?
Yes, please.
One of the goals of the movement is co-creation.
Hosts may help organize:
- Community conversations
- Storytelling nights
- Shared meals
- Listening circles
- School visits
- Creative events
- Music gatherings
- Public activations
The RoadTrip grows through partnership.
What does success look like for the RoadTrip?
Success is not to be measured in miles traveled.
What we value is the safe spaces created, experiences ignited, and the special moments that are brought forth.
A conversation that changes perspective.
A stranger who becomes a friend.
A story that cracks open assumptions and softens judgment.
A community that feels more connected.
A person who feels seen. Heard. Understood.
Those are the miles that matter.
What question sits at the center of the RoadTrip?
Perhaps it is this:
“What would happen if we became as curious about one another as we are certain about one another?”
The RoadTrip exists to find out.
