There are some life experiences in life that people may say are Everything, like, “Love is Everything.” Or, someone in our lives, often older, will remind us that “your health is the most important thing.” What that person (it could be us, of course) generally is referring to is physical health. Our bodies. While there may be several “Everythings” that many of us can agree upon, there is one that, without which, none of the others may fully be experienced: Mental Health is Everything.
When we started listening to the mental health stories of people of all ages, we were blown away by everyone’s openness and transparency. People are not just willing to talk, they are eager and moved to share personal truths and take ghosts out of the closets and pink elephants out of the room. Youth are leading the way to unshame and destigmatize the vast amount of labels and diagnoses that are enmeshed in society. Some that carry with them a wide spectrum of beliefs, assumptions, misunderstandings and judgments.
Who doesn’t know someone – or MANY someones – who are struggling with their mental health? Or is it, “mental illness?” And, are they one and the same? Who says?
For UnLabelMe, it is a deep honor to bear witness to the vulnerability and beauty of Humanity.
